Over 260 attendees registered for the Conference. You can see the list of Who is Registered on attachment at the end of this page. The purpose of the Future of Libraries Conference is to introduce ideas, services, and programs important for library services of the future. Speakers will give an inspiration, examples, and insights intoimprovements and changes for the Future of Libraries.

SEFLIN Adobe Connect Charles Mayberry, SEFLIN Director of Information Services In early 2008, SEFLIN launched the Adobe Connect project. During the past few months, SEFLIN staff have been orienting staff in member libraries to the software which allows members to hold meetings without leaving their office. Charles Mayberry will share the features of this tool and demonstrate how it can work for you.

George Pearson has been a reference librarian at Florida International University since 1990. Serving as FIU’s representative to the OPAC Subcommittee of the Florida Center for Library Automation, he has assisted with the development of three OPACs: WebLUIS, Aleph, and Endeca.

Hi,

This session is going to cover newer trends in gaming in libraries. While we will briefly cover some basic concepts, we will not be rehashing the same gaming programs that have been going on in libraries for the last five years. Instead, we're going to talk about how some libraries have started using online games as a form of outreach and library instruction. We will also talk about how you can do the same in your library, even if you have no money or technical knowledge! Examples will apply to public, academic, and every other type of library you can imagine. If you have any questions, please reply to the gaming in libraries thread below.

Kathy Makens, Electronic Information Services Librarian, Durham County Main Library

Biography:

Kathy Makens has been the Electronic Information Services Librarian for Durham County Libraries in Durham, NC since August of 2007. Previously, she was the Young Adult Librarian at the Broward County Library/North Regional/BCC Library where she started the Tech Lab game design summer program. Kathy has presented a wide array of video game design classes using both open source and proprietary software. She has presented on Library 2.0 and gaming in libraries at ALA, FLA and the SEFLIN Young Adult Network conferences. Kathy was a contributor to the book, Get Connected: Tech Programs for Teens, and contributes to the Durham County Library Tech Talk blog and Alternative Teen Services blog. She will be presenting "Outreach 2.0" at the ALA Gaming in Libraries Symposium this November.

There has been a lot of buzz about Library 2.0 and social software over the past few years. Social software is opening up new opportunities for reaching out to patrons and providing library services in the online medium, while Library 2.0 presents a new service philosophy for libraries. Farkas will discuss the implications of these trends for libraries and what organizations need to do to ride this shift toward better services for patrons. Practical tips will be offered, illustrated with examples of libraries that are already on the road to 2.0 through their innovative practices and services

“SEFLIN Connect: The New Online Video Conferencing, Meeting, and Collaboration Service”
Charles Mayberry, SEFLIN’s Director of Information Services, obtained his graduate degree in Library and Information Studies at Florida State University in 1993. His past experience in librarianship includes seven years as the Director of Information Services at the National Golf Foundation where he developed an industry library. While at SEFLIN, Charles has led the Virtual Library Team, helping to develop MyLibraryService.org, MiServiciodeBiblioteca.org, and the new SEFLIN.org Web site. He also led the development of Florida Library Jobs, a state-wide recruitment service for Florida's libraries. Since joining SEFLIN seven years ago, he has been a frequent speaker on the topics of library recruitment and virtual library services. He also holds certification as a Project Management Professional through the Project Management Institute. He currently serves as the chair of the Virtual Library Discussion Group for the Association of Specialized and Cooperative Library Agencies (ASCLA) and is also an adjunct faculty member of the University of South Florida's School of Library and Information Science. Poster Session:
Several current and past members of the SEFLIN Reference Committee presented a poster session entitled "No Travel Required: Planning a Regional Conference for Local & New Librarians" on Monday, July 30, 2008 during the annual American Libraries Association Conference in Anaheim, CA. Based on an upcoming article in The Reference Librarian, the poster session highlighted the preparations and benefits involved in the SEFLIN Energize Conference, as well as other one-day SEFLIN conferences that have centered on themes such as diversity and support staff. A timeline of preparations, photos from previous conferences, and information on the benefits were included. The SEFLIN Reference Committee has been hosting the Energize Conference every other year for ten years, and hosted this summer's Future of Libraries Conference on July 16. Chris Casper (BCC), Valerie Boulos (FIU), Larry Treadwell (STU), and Rachael Cathcart (FAU) were involved various aspects of the preparation and presentation of this poster session.
